In July 2019, John Muir Health and Optum announced the details of their new, comprehensive relationship as a thoughtful solution to advancing high quality, convenient and affordable health care to consumers in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Optum provides managed services across a broad set of non-clinical functions for John Muir Health, including information technology, revenue cycle management, analytics, purchasing and strategic transformation initiatives. Optum also helps to accelerate John Muir Health’s ability to deliver value-based care by managing its ambulatory care coordination, specifically in the areas of case management and utilization management, and managing the administrative operations for John Muir Health's delegated risk business.
Combining the local health care subject matter expertise from John Muir Health with Optum's operational experience and transformational services and consulting represents a new model for partnerships that drive health system performance. By working with Optum, John Muir Health can focus on delivering the highest quality patient care while Optum delivers technology, analytics, services and operations expertise. Optum’s services and solutions enhance operational efficiency, reduce administrative workload and bring more data-driven insight to providers and patients at the point of care using its clinical technologies and advanced analytic tools.

UCSF Health and John Muir Health developed a partnership in 2015. Together, the two organizations opened the Berkeley Outpatient Center in 2018. The site includes primary care and specialist physicians, urgent care, a surgery center, lab and imaging services in one convenient location. UCSF Health and John Muir Health have also developed a network of cancer care centers designed to improve the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer patients throughout the East Bay. Our cancer patients benefit from the expertise of top cancer specialists from John Muir Health and UCSF Health, as well as having access to the latest treatment advances close to home. Together, we offer patients the expertise of specialists in both health systems, an extensive support network, and the most precise and personal cancer services that John Muir Health and UCSF Health offer. Through this partnership, in 2020 we opened the UCSF- John Muir Health Cancer Center in Berkeley as well as the UCSF – John Muir Health Jean and Ken Hofmann Cancer Center in Walnut Creek in 2024. Additional locations include Brentwood, Concord and San Ramon.

Together, we are working to further develop San Ramon Regional Medical Center and future outpatient projects in the area such as the Pleasanton Outpatient Center, coming in 2015. The Outpatient Center will be convenient for patients in the area, allowing access to a full range of services under one roof, and enabling us to work better as a team to coordinate care and enhance the patient experience. This allows families to access expert children’s specialty care locally through John Muir Health, with convenient locations in Walnut Creek and Pleasant Hill.
Since the opening of our Pediatric Intensive Care Unit in April 2015, we're now able to care for the most critically ill and injured children, from age 0 to 18—right here in Walnut Creek. This pediatric inpatient hospital unit is the first of its kind in Contra Costa County, offering critical care services for children in local and surrounding communities, including the treatment of a wide range of conditions, including congenital heart and neurological disorders, scoliosis, diabetes and respiratory problems.

John Muir Health's Accountable Care Organization Approach
An Accountable Care Organization (ACO) is a group of doctors, hospitals and other health care professionals that closely align and collaborate on providing coordinated, quality care to patients and help avoid unnecessary duplication of services and medical errors.
As an ACO, John Muir Health coordinates health care services as well as provides care management and wellness and prevention programs, such as:
- Promoting quality, cost-effective medical outcomes through a patient-centered medical home that utilizes an interdisciplinary provider team (physicians, nurses, medical assistants, case managers, social workers).
- Enhancing care by coaching and providing specific tools to patients with complex care needs and their family members and caregivers to continue their healing during the transition from the hospital to home.
John Muir Health currently partners our ACO with Anthem Blue Cross of California, UnitedHealthcare and Blue Shield of California for their HMO and/or PPO membership.
